How to Insulate Your Home and Prevent Heat Loss this Winter

Are you tired of having to come up with creative ways to stay warm in your Portland or Seattle home during the winter? Maybe you’ve been wearing extra clothing layers inside or cranking the heat up more and more each year, which may also be increasing the cost of your energy bills.

If this is your reality and you are struggling with heat loss in your Washington or Oregon home, then you may want to look into the ways you can properly insulate it.

How Does Insulation Help With Heat Loss Prevention?

Insulation helps your home retain the heat it circulates and prevents heat from leaving your home as quickly, allowing your home to stay warmer for longer periods. Heat escapes through your walls, doors, windows, roof, and floor, so insulating these areas is critical in order for your home to remain heated. When these areas are properly insulated, the heat in your home will have to travel through another layer in order to escape.

What Can Help Keep Your Home Insulated?

At HomeRx, we want your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system to work correctly—especially during the winter! In addition to this, we don’t want your home losing heat and forcing you to waste money by overworking your heating system.

Reach out to our HomeRx professionals who can inspect your home’s insulation and give you feedback. Additionally, we recommend trying the following tips to help ensure your home is properly insulated for the cold winter ahead of us:

1. Get Thermal Curtains to Trap Heat Inside

Thermal curtains are designed to add insulation to the home. These thick curtains block windows and sliding glass doors from transferring cold air from the outside in the winter as well as heat during summer. In addition, the multilayered curtains block sunlight as well.

2. Properly Seal Your Doors and Windows

Since doorways provide a way for heat to escape, consider sealing the edges with weatherstripping or foam tape. This will help close up any air leaks around your doorway and keep the heat inside of your home.

You can also add an extra layer to your windows by adding plastic or purchasing a do-it-yourself (DIY) window insulation kit. Alternatively, you can reach out to our HomeRx insulation professionals who can recommend the best course of action to take for insulating your home.

3. Consider Newer Exterior Doors

If you have older exterior doors in your home, you may want to think about replacing some. Newer exterior doors are far more insulated than older designs, which means more heat will stay inside and keep you feeling warm this winter.

4. Insulate Your Home

While you may be able to do most of the above on your own in an attempt to provide more insulation to your home, you can always contact our HomeRx professionals to determine a plan that will work best for your home and provide you with the proper insulation. Our insulation experts can insulate areas that are prone to heat loss—like your attic, walls, and garage.

5. Seal Air Leaks

Air leaks are the most common reason for loss of heat and cool air in your home. While sealing air leaks does not eliminate the need for insulating your home, it is important to have these “holes” filled in to prevent further heat loss.

Per a University of Nebraska–Lincoln study, inadequate insulation and air leakage are the leading causes of energy waste in most homes. Reducing leakage via air sealing may reduce utility costs by as much as 40 percent.
